Why Motivation Is Only Temporary, And Ways To Help
“I just don’t have any motivation”
Recently, I put out a survey to find out a bit more about where people are at with their health and fitness goals for 2022.
It was also a way to find out the areas that people are struggling with.
See, post-lockdowns things may not have clicked back into action as smoothly.
And even though we all have goals and dreams, and want to get back to normality, some of us haven’t hit the ground running.
With that, the most common comment was the lack of motivation.
Now the truth is, motivation will only ever be temporary.
It’s that warm feeling you get when you imagine a goal, how good you feel when you’d hit it, and how much better life would be.
But as we both know, the more time passes, the more that motivation dwindles.
Because as the cliché states – motivation is what gets you started, discipline is what keeps you going.
That’s why it’s a great idea to work on building some repeatable habits that ingrain a level of discipline and routine into your days and weeks.
And that discipline will keep you on track when motivation deserts you.
So here’s an idea for you to help with motivation:
Grab a pen and paper or use your notes app and map out the next 7 days.
Pick 1-2 things you want to achieve a day that will help you build a routine, create some momentum, and make you feel better in yourself.
It can be as simple as going for a 20-minute walk, drinking an extra pint of water, or being in bed by 11pm.
Ideally, you will end up with 14 tasks to complete by this time next Sunday.
Each day, you’ll get up and all you have to do in that day is tick off the tasks for that day.
Don’t worry about any other day, just get that one done and dusted.
Then by the end of the week, you should be able to look back and see 7 days of tasks completed.
And all you have to do then is repeat the task next Sunday and go again.
It will help get things moving again, and as the weeks go by you can make your tasks a bit bigger, or add in more.
So, give it a go.
