My Priorities When Coaching Ladies

coaching ladies

It’s Friday and I don’t want to go too heavy on details so I’m just going to do a quick piece on my priorities when I’m coaching ladies.

Over the last 18 months, the female membership base here in StrongLife Gym has exploded and it’s currently at about 60% females.

All in lifting weights, training hard and heavy and making progress week after week.

Many have said they can’t believe what they’re achieving without starving themselves and running like crazy.

Which brings me to my first point.

#1 – Getting Ladies To Eat MORE

This can be quite tricky at first. But over time it proves hugely valuable.

Unfortunately, over the last 10+ years, society and sh*tty magazines have been telling ladies that they need to be stick thin, pushing ridiculous low calorie diets and the worst of all, manipulating them by selling them terrible products to lose weight with unrealistic results or downright dangerous protocols.

Long term dieting will strip you of valuable nutrients, let alone vital muscle mass. It will leave you with little to no energy and will rob you of any happiness with your own body.

So my first job is to get girls eating more and nourishing their bodies with good food and understanding their calorie requirements and food sources.

If you’ve been dieting for years then it’s more than likely that your body has hit a wall and you can’t lose any more weight. What we do here is bring you back up to maintenance calories so your body can recover. Spend a few months there and then when we cut calories for fat loss you will get a better response.

Like training programs, dieting should also be done in phases.

It can be quite the mental battle at first because, ya know, they’ve been drilled into believing that they have to be stick thin.

I say f*ck that.

I want you to become comfortable with your own body and not be stressing about what others will ever think of you. Life is way too short to be constantly living in other peoples heads. Respect yourself, your body and forget about what other people think.

#2 – Lift Some Weights

Thankfully, my job has become a little bit easier as the barrier has been broken down over the last few years when it comes to ladies in the weights area.

There still is this huge worry about getting too bulky (once again forced on them by society and bullsh*t magazines).

Depending on each individual, I’ll take a few different approaches but the long term goal is to move all the girls onto working with Barbell’s.

That’s when the fun starts and I can really show them the benefits of lifting weights to transform their body, their mental health and also begin to appreciate themselves more.

By lifting weights and focusing on getting stronger, you’re using fuel more effectively and in turn, can end up being able to eat more while still hitting your goals.

We don’t even do your conventional cardio yet people are transforming themselves.

#3 – Giving Them A Comfortable Place To Train

Gyms are as intimidating as hell. No one wants to walk in and be eye-balled for the whole session.

No one wants to feel like they’re being judged or that they don’t belong there.

So by providing a friendly and comfortable environment they can come in, get stuck into training and most of all, enjoy it.

You can get the best program in the world, but if you don’t enjoy doing it or are comfortable in your gym then you will most likely not finish it.

Training needs to be fun, enjoyable and challenging.

Boring stuff never motivates anyone.

In summary:

  • Start understanding why good nutrition is important to you and your goals.
  • Avoid bullsh*t advice or magic pills, they just want your money.
  • Start lifting weights. Learn how to Squat, Deadlift, Kettlebell Swing, etc.
  • Make sure you enjoy it so you can keep on doing it.
