Cardio to burn fat, which should I do?
So yesterday, I was asked “Cardio to burn fat, which type should I be doing?”
Now the question was brought up because of a “instagram fitchick” said go for long walks to burn the most fat because going for high intensity runs burns carbohydrates.
That is true to a certain extent. But the actual amount of fat you would burn during a long slow walk would be very small.
Not enough for your pants to suddenly be looser by then time you got home again.
Now I want to explain why it’s not as important as you think.
And I have to sound like a broken record again….
If you really want to lose fat, you must be in a CALORIE DEFICIT. (Your Energy In < Energy Out)
That’s the bottom line (because Stone Cold said so – he didn’t really)
So the type of cardio you do won’t elicit fat loss unless you are in a deficit. Whether you run or walk won’t make much of a difference if you’re not controlling the energy balance. (if you’re eating too much then the running will offset some of it and slow down your rate of weight gain – I don’t know about you but I’d rather put down the cake than have to go for a run).
Simply put, you can run like Forest Gump but if you’re eating too much then don’t expect to drop weight.
But at the end of the day, the priority of either is to burn calories to assist in achieving a calorie deficit.
Too many people want to dress up information to make it sound really fancy so people jump all over it and throw money at them.
I’m here to try and dissect the information and give you the best advice possible.
Most of the information I follow is science based so I can easily cut through the BS on Instagram etc.
Feel free to send any feedback or any questions you’d like answered.
